Springheel Jack is an interesting Victorian folk tale but so far this story has failed to catch light.
The Doctor rabbits on to himself for ages. Characters talking to themselves is something I really try to avoid if possible in a radio script and I think I’ve failed if I have to have it occur. I would dropped the TARDIS scene and got the Doctor into the action faster.
There’s little sense of menace so far. All that’s happened is that Doctor has been mistaken for someone else. WE know he’s not the killer, and the police may arrest him but they won’t really harm him. There’s not enough conflict yet.
David Maciver needs to put more colour into his voice. At the moment its all on one level and there’s no energy. Similarly Sammy Rey’s Emily doesn’t seem to get too concerned about anything.
Sorry but my mind kept wandering throughout this episode. It needs a lot more oomph, more speed, a sense that something is at stake affecting the people I am listening too, rather than general ripper chronology going on in the background.

I can’t really be impartial, but… this is the first Doctor Who iteration I like.

Like any series, it’s going to have a rough first episode – but I think Ryan and John have done a nice job setting up the premise for people who may not be straight-out Doctor Who fans. I’d much rather have a frontally-didactic first episode than something I’d get lost on.

Like I said – not impartial, but, for a non-Doctor Who fan, I was impressed.
