Giant Gnome Productions

A Web Audio Production Company

Giant Gnome Productions is a new audio drama group on the block. Our niche is great audio drama, no matter what the story type. We love all genres, from Westerns to Horror, and everything in between. We are a group of audio nuts who love to create great shows in the audio tradition. We also have a number of non-fiction podcasts which we believe in and promote. Our audio drama is available from our feeds, as well as on iTunes. Both links are available on the original show pages. You can download each episode individually as well. We have a lot of fun here, and we are always looking for new people interested in helping us out on our productions, or just schmoozing with us on our various projects.

You Just Can’t Make This Up… Star Trek: Outpost

Posted by Nick On July - 3 - 2009

Nick here.

A few weeks ago, I made a trip up to South Dakota from Fort Collins, Colorado.  On my way back, I got a bit lost and headed part of the way toward Nebraska, when I found these two signs.

If you’re a fan of Star Trek: Outpost, you’re gonna get a kick out of it – I couldn’t believe it myself – these two signs only 15 minutes apart.  You just can’t make this up.

JENNETH

Any race; any gender. Anywhere from mid-thirties to late sixties. Competent engineer aboard the Pirate Vessel Solar Winds who is respectful and fearful of his/her captain.

LINE 1: As near as I can figure it out, when the discharge hit our shields, it actually drew power from them, and fed the shield energy back into the shield generators. From there, it traveled through connecting systems damaging the connections, rather than actually damaging the equipment itself… I’d suggest spending a week in dock rechecking everything, but we’re good to go for now.

LINE 2: (PUZZLED…HOW DOES THIS HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE SHIP?) I can’t imagine he doesn’t. Why? But I hope you’re not suggesting we raid …

DS3 SECURITY GUARD

Any race; any gender. Anywhere from low twenties to early thirties. May not be the brightest bulb in the garden, but earnest and helpful.

LINE 1: (CALLING AFTER) A reminder, sirs, that you are entering a restricted zone and all conversations are monitored and recorded.

YOSSARIAN (yo-SORRY-en)

Alien merchant. Gender and age as appropriate to species, but an older, established businessbeing. Harried by the day-to-day stress of keeping a business going under trying circumstances. A good guy, willing to help a friend, but practical and unwilling to throw good resources after bad.

LINE 1: (OVER COMM) Look, Yurrel, I’ll help you in any way I can. After all, some of my cargo was on the Profitable Venture, and now you owe me for it, but I’ve had to rebook everything we had a contract on. If something else comes in the door in the next couple weeks, or one of my other transport jobs runs into a snag, I might be able to throw some work your way, but I need to know what your capabilities are, first.

LINE 2: (OVER COMM) … But only if you have a cargo lined up. And no-one’s going to commit a cargo until you have a ship. Yurrel, we’ve talked about these arrangements many times before over Saurian Brandies. They never end well. (SIGH) Let me ask around. I might be able to find something that will help you start working off your debts.

DERSIK (DER-SICK)

Male, mid 30s-40s. Intergalactic hauler. Low on the rung of commerce. Has more ambition than moxie. Picture one of those smarmy guys from the biker bar down the street.

LINE 1: You’re calling in my marker already? Goshen, look, I knew you were new to the lending industry when I came to you … as a last resort… but I assumed you knew that you have to at least give me a chance to make a few runs on the engine repairs I had done with the latinum you lent me! Remember? The longer you hold my marker, the more interest you earn on the loan.

LINE 2: (TO HIS OWN CREW) Is this translator working right? I just heard the Ferengi say he didn’t want the latinum!

CREWMEMBER #1

MALE, Any age, any species. Even lower on the rung of commerce than Dersik. Less ambition, less moxie, more of a taste for fermented beverages.

LINE 1: (OVER COMM) He can’t come to the Comm right now; he’s sleeping. Besides, we’re supposed to be running silent. It’s getting dangerous out here! Never know when you’re going to be blown out of the stars! Like the Pinch wasn’t bad enough on its own, now we have to deal with phaser-happy pirates!

Nick Gnome PictureIt just wouldn’t be Star Trek: Dimensions if it wasn’t delayed somehow.  I’m going to push back this deadline three days, to Sunday.

Nick here – writing at 3 AM Friday morning.  I’ve got a story to tell you.  You might not want to hear it, but I’m gonna give it anyway, for what it’s worth.

I can’t tell you how frustrated I am by this delay.  I wanted so badly to get this miniseries released on time. We’re only pushing back three days, but I feel like I’ve let you – our fanbase, down.  If you can forgive us that, you’ll have Part One of Star Trek: Dimensions – Life Before The Mirror on Sunday.

If you’re a fan, you know there have been delays before.  This time… it’s a bit different.

Waldo has been crazy slammed these last two weeks burring his head in school books to keep his grades up.  Like a dummy I kept asking him if we were on track rather than if he could use a hand, and so we really didn’t communicate all that well to get the project back on track.  Late last night he transferred the files over to me so that I might give post-production (piecing it all together) a shot.

If you follow my personal blog at IAmNickArmstrong.com, you know we’ve had some problems with audio quality for one of the actor’s lines. I’ve been working through most of the night last night (5 AM) and tonight (3 AM) to see if we can correct the audio on our end in an attempt to release on time.  I’ve had a good amount of success correcting the problems, but we’re definitely going to need to re-record that actor’s lines AFTER part one.  But, as you can see from the lack of podcasted episode, that sapped a lot of the production time away that would have been used to put the show together.

I’m going to move forward to release Part One by Sunday, but having to re-record the audio for Georgia’s lines may mean a 15-30 day delay in Part 2… depending on how fast we can get the new lines back and how they sound.  We’re going scene by scene here, making sure it’s all good.  The last thing I’d want to do is come back from a 6 month break and hand you a steaming pile of audio crap.  That’s not how I roll.

Again, as with last time, you have my sincere apologies that we’ve broken yet another deadline promise.  We really are doing the best we can… and if you stick with us, you’re in for a real treat – starting friggin’ Sunday – even if I have to stay up EVERY NIGHT until then.

Star Trek: Dimensions – “Life Before The Mirror” mini-series

We’ve kept you all waiting for far too long. Now, the wait is… kind of over.

Giant Gnome Productions is proud to announce a new, 13 part mini-series of Star Trek: Dimensions called “Life Before the Mirror”. A new piece of this mini-series will be released on the 15th and 30th of every month, starting April 30th 2009.

The mini-series examines the lives of the crew of the USS Churchill before the ship’s destruction, and their mission into the mirror universe, as told in Episode 1 “Sacrifice” which was released in August of last year. Each episode will be short in length, ranging from 4 to 10 minutes, featuring an in-depth look into each crewmember through the eyes of the counselor, Georgia Harolds.

Along the way, we’ll learn more about the crew as well as the events that transpired to bring them into the mirror universe.
Join us on April 30, 2009 for the beginning of the journey.

As an aside, we realize that we HAVE kept you waiting for quite some time and that you’ve all shown a great deal of patience for Dimensions. That being said, we’re planning on bringing you full-length episodes starting in Fall 2009.

We’ve said this before. This time, we’re not kidding. You’ll have a monthly full-length feature to look forward to in Fall of ’09 culminating to a complete first season. We’ve sketched out two full seasons so far, and the door is wide-open for a third depending on interest.

We know we set the bar high with “Sacrifice” and the last thing we want to do is let you down. We want to know what you think, each step of the way, with this mini-series. If you don’t like the direction it’s going, let us know. If you think we’re moving too slowly with the mini-series, let us know.

In short – participate! Star Trek is something we’re all very attached to, and we don’t want to put out something you don’t want to hear.
Thanks for listening and thanks for sticking with us!  Feel free to contact us on Twitter with any thoughts, suggestions, or ideas. @ImNickArmstrong and @WaleedOvase
